Leonel Cantú

Leonel Cantú nació el 1 de mayo de 1939 en Congregación Cantú, en Nuevo León, México. Fue el segundo hijo de diez hermanos que tuvieron Raúl y Ciria Cantú.  A corta edad se fue a Monterrey para ejercer sus estudios académicos y posteriormente se graduó como tornero mecánico. Fue entonces que conoció a quien sería su amada esposa, Rosa Angelica.

A poco tiempo de casados se mudaron a California y años después se establecieron en Houston, Texas.  Tuvieron la dicha de tener a cuatro hijos, y llegó a ser abuelo de ocho nietos y bisabuelo de cinco bisnietos, además de ser tío de muchos sobrinos y sobrinas. A todos ellos los quería mucho.

Leonel le gustaba mucho la jardinería; el plantar flores y árboles frutales. Tenía muy buena mano porque lo que sembraba no se secaba, siempre florecía y daba fruto.  Pasaba horas arreglando su jardín y estaba muy orgulloso de ver el fruto de sus obras. También le gustaba mucho cantar las canciones rancheras y los boleros.

Leonel disfrutaba mucho de ir a las reuniones, a las asambleas, y el convivir con los hermanos de la congregación. Aunque él no llegó a dedicar su vida a Jehová, sí lo reconoció como su Dios y respetó sus leyes y principios, en especial durante sus últimos años. Su esperanza en la promesa de Dios de que pronto volveremos a ver a nuestros seres queridos que han fallecido en la Resurrección lo mantuvo fuerte y fiel hasta el final de su vida. Nos consuela el saber que su partida no es un “adiós” sino un “hasta pronto”.   (Juan 11:25)

Leonel Cantú was born on May 1, 1939, in the small town of Congregación Cantú, in Nuevo León, Mexico.  He was the second son of ten siblings born to Raúl and Ciria Cantú.  At a young age, he went to Monterrey to pursue his academic studies and later graduated as a machinist. It was then that he met Rosa Angelica, who would later become his beloved wife.

Shortly after they were married, they moved to California and years later settled in Houston, Texas.  They had the joy of bearing four children. He became a grandfather of eight grandchildren and a great-grandfather of five great-grandchildren, as well as being the uncle of many nephews and nieces.  He loved all of them very much.

Leonel was very fond of gardening, planting flowers and fruit trees. He had a ‘green thumb’ because what he planted never dried up, always flourished, and bore fruit.  He spent hours fixing his garden and was very proud to see the fruit of his works. He also enjoyed singing ranchera songs and boleros.

Leonel enjoyed going to the Christian meetings, conventions, and socializing with the brothers of the congregation. Although he did not dedicate his life to Jehovah, he recognized him as his God and respected his laws and principles, especially during his later years. His hope in God’s promise that we will soon see our loved ones that have passed away in the Resurrection kept him strong and faithful until the end of his life. We are comforted to know that his departure is not a “goodbye” but a “see you soon”.   (John 11:25)
